WHAT'S A DOULA?
A doula, also known as a birth companion, birth coach or post-birth supporter, is a non-medical companion who supports a birthing woman by providing continuous care before, during, or after childbirth in the form of information, physical support, and emotional support. They also may provide support to the partner and family. Unlike a midwife, doulas are not medical professionals and therefore cannot administer medication. Doulas are typically certified with some courses taking over a year to complete. Practical training is involved to become certified. Support from a Doula may also reduce the woman's negative feelings about their experience.
A Birth Doula focuses on helping a mom through labor and delivery by providing emotional, physical, and educational support to the mom who is expecting. She often stays with you for a few hours following the birth to help address baby’s needs as well.
A Postpartum Doula comes to the house and helps the new mom and family throughout the postpartum experience by mentoring them with evidence based information, helping them around the house with light house work and making sure mom and family feel confident in their new lifestyle. The most important thing Doulas' teach is to trust in yourself that you know what you're doing.
~Barbara Katz Ruthman
"Birth is not only about making babies, birth is about making mothers strong competent, capable, mothers who trust themselves and know there inner strengths."
About Your Doula
This is my Passion and I can't wait to share it with you!
My journey as a Doula started when my husband joined the military. Any friends I had I would help them whether they needed a friend to go to the doctor with or a baby sitter just to get some time to them selves. My husband spent 8 years in the service so i spent 8 years as an honorary Doula. I have been a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear, and a cheerleader to all of my military family and friends. In 2018 my husband and I decided to leave the military and follow our dreams to start careers in our passions. In 2019 I met a Doula through Facebook who opened the door into this beautiful Doula world. I started building my passion as a volunteer Doula in Sentara Princess Anne where I have Doula-ed un-medicated, medicated and cesarean births. In early 2020 I completed my Dona workshop and I am now Training to become a certified Dona Birth and postpartum Doula.
